About Us

We have been selling used books by mail order since 1982. We were living in the suburbs of NYC and decided to cut down on our "stuff" and move back into the City. The only "stuff" we had were books -- then while selling  (and buying more)- we very quickly discovered the bookselling business. .....  The fascinating books that passed thru our hands!!  ..... We loved it......  By 1986 we had 8,000 used books and we needed more room - we moved north to beautiful green Columbia County.   We bought a cheap old summer hotel, repaired and renovated it a bit to make it into our house......

We started selling online in 1995.  We now have a general stock of over 50,000 books that we are working on - of which about 13,000 are online.  We sell only used books, including out-of-print books, scarce and rare.  Our books are mostly non-fiction, our greatest concentration has always been in art, history, biography, military, but we also have much more - see list of categories on home page.

We recognize that are books are being bought sight-unseen, so we try to describe books with enough useful detail-- if you have seen the book before you will recognize it, if you have never seen it you can picture it.  We also send images on request.  If the book isn't right let us know.  If there is a problem with the book let us know.

A couple of years ago we opened the LITTLE RED BOOK SHACK on the property near the road - open on weekends from mid- April thru mid -October -- and other times by request. Now we have expanded to the WHITE COTTAGE ANNEX a few feet away. These buildings contain about 20,000 books, top price $1.00 for books.  These are desirable books- in the best condition - no junk and no exlibrary books.    The Shack also includes thousands of vinyl LP records, mostly classical LPs,  in finest condition from private collection- also thousands of videos, and maps, magazines, ephemera, photos, post cards.

Our business model in the Shack and Cottage -- Anything you want, you CAN afford - you can enjoy browsing, sit out at a table and have your lunch.
